Welcome to The Great Tree
Why The Great Tree is here
This site originated during the first running of the online game, URU Live, created by Cyan Worlds in 2003. URU Live was cancelled before it ever truly began, however a diverse and devoted community remained...
Their devotion paid off! URU Live will be relaunched in 2006.
One of the purposes of this site is to archive and share our experiences from URU Live. And with the arrival of new explorers, we hope to serve as a useful resource. Check for Chat Log submissions here. |

Uru Story - Daedalus Tuesday, March 14 @ 18:59:35 PST by daedalus (691 reads) | Perhaps I'll open it up with my own experiences, since only a few of us were able to be as involved as we were. I apologize if the following could be viewed as broken prose, but since the story never truly ended it is impossible to create a complete arc. Please inform me if I am incorrect regarding any detail. This is usually the story I tell when people ask what exactly it was I did down in the cavern back then.

COMCAST And The Great Tree Aren't Friends Tuesday, October 04 @ 17:20:45 PDT by brian (568 reads) | Hi Folks! Sorry for the confusion lately with people not being able to see the tree. Seems comcast users can't get to the IP address this server is located on. We're still trying to figure out why. Latest theory is it is a Comcast routing issue. Wish I had more. I'll keep you posted.

URU Live Prologue Storyline - Part I Sunday, September 04 @ 20:51:59 PDT by brian (871 reads) | Part I - Invitations to Revolutions
[Dedicated to Cyan Worlds, and the people who made it all happen.]
My experiences in the Cavern of D’ni started in September of 2003. I found my way in early as part of a group of explorers later knows as the “Beta” group. We were a select group of people, explorers, chosen to conduct ourselves around the cavern and the newly discovered ages without supervision. Chosen by who, I’m still not entirely clear on. It was risky, and we felt it on a daily basis...

URU Live Prologue Storyline - Introduction Thursday, September 01 @ 04:54:36 PDT by brian (726 reads) | This post is the introduction to a series of articles I am going to write in the coming days and weeks about my impressions of where the URU Live Prologue storyline was headed. I will attempt to detail the history of events as they occured, and give my impression of what the main characters may have had in mind using references from chat logs (some of which haven't been fully released) where possible. Much of this will be pure speculation, as I haven't really gotten any extra inside information from Cyan about any of this (except for what I will reference in the articles). However, since I had a direct role in some of the more intricate details of what was going on in the story, I feel like I have more of an idea of where things were going to go than most.
The URU Live Prologue was made up of a revolutionary series of events orchistrated by actor run characters, some of which had a profound impact on the real life psychology of its "players."
As Myst V is released and I progress through the game, I will also attempt to reconcile some of the revelations in that story with some of the events and activities of the main characters that occurred in URU Live. Hopefully this will help to satisfactorily tie up all of the loose threads in the saga of D'ni, and the restoration of the Cavern by the Explorers.

The Future of The Great Tree Tuesday, August 30 @ 06:58:58 PDT by brian (574 reads) | With the coming of End of Ages and the indefinite diversion of Cyan from the saga of D'ni, The Great Tree site will need to refocus.
I'd like to begin discussing this coming change now, so that the transition will be smooth and painless.
I'd like for us to continue to be a main branch in the community of Myst fans, and more generally, fans of whatever worlds Cyan has in store for us in the future.
I've opened it up for discussion here. Please contribute, as we are all the branches.

The Ages of Ilathid need more artists Tuesday, January 18 @ 23:10:53 PST by Farlesis (1413 reads) | Anonymous writes "Hi all, just wanted to share this and let you know about it:
The Ages of Ilathid is a new MYST fan-game project in the works.
It will use very high quality graphics on a slideshow style (like MYST or Riven), will feature 9 large Ages and will be downloadable from the internet, for free.
This is not an add-on Age for Uru. This is a new game, from scratch, that has Cyans permission to be written. All code, engine, and graphics are new.
Both Mac Os X (10.2 & upcoming), Linux & Windows versions are on the works. The estimated release date is May 2005 (if everything goes well...)
Actualy, storyline & general design are done, puzzles design is almost finished, the coding & 3D parts are in progress.
Here's our website
A French section, a trailer and a couple of renderings have recently been added to the website, and we're planning to add German and Spanish versions in the next weeks.
And here are our boards
We still got open positions... if anyone wants to help us, just give us a call. For more infos, please look at the contact page of the website or at the recruitment thread at the boards.
Please visit our site and, if possible, help our project. Everyone is invited to join! If you have some skills and the willing to make dreams true, then come with us in the great adventure of a game creation!
The first alpha testing (game engine testing) has ended. For the second alpha, we'll need testers on all platforms (both Windows, Linux & Mac OS X). If you're interested, please apply at the recruitment forum.
a New Year wallpaper has just been added to our gallery.
We are dramatically looking for more 3D modelers :
- Basic English language knowledge (reading/writing), it's an international project.
- Preferentially on PC and 3ds Max, ( I personnaly run C4D on Macintosh and we can work, so...).
- At least able to model simple objects wich will be used to "fill" the environnements (so, no need to be a "polygon God").
- Able to go check the game board at least 2/3 times a week.

Note: This project is being run by volunteers. That means nobody will be paid, except with the delight of seeing dreams and work coming true.
Thanks for reading :)
