Right now, information from GameTap on how international support works.

At the GameTap forums, I wrote:
Quote:
We really need clarification on this issue. Now. I am a US player myself, but I am posting this plea on behalf of international players...

As dredisantjdm33 mentioned, the "who can play GameTap" information in Support is not clear about what limitations exist. "Anyone with internet access with a broadband connection can play GameTap" tells a very different story from "Anyone with internet access with a broadband connection can play a small selection of GameTap's games; also, not all "Free" games are available to all international customers."

Here's what I've discerned on my own and from postings at other forums:

1. Contrary to what kmfrank suggested, some international people are unable to register for a free TapID (they are redirected to a page that still says GameTap is only available in the US and Canada only). Without a TapID, these same people are also unable to post on these forums to explain their problem and ask for help. For example, I know of at least one person in Israel who is unable to register for a TapID.

2. When I check the "Free Play" / "Free Games" section, all of the titles are listed as "Free until Jun 4." That's just 3 days from now. So, getting clarification now is urgent for people who want to play those specific games..

3. If I click most of the Free titles, there is a "Play Now" box with options to launch the game in either the "Lite" player or the "Deluxe" player. For some games, the Deluxe player is required. BUT: For at least one title in the Free games list, there is no option to launch the game AT ALL, although it is clearly in the Free games list. Is it in the list by mistake? (The title is Myst Online.)

4. It is not clear under what circumstances a TapID is required to play games. Is it required for all games? Or is it required just for games played through the "Deluxe" player, including the Free games that are only available through "Deluxe" ? Or are there other rules I haven't intuited?

I could ask more questions, but they're all derivative of the above concerns...

I hope for an answer soon!

Dinah replied:

Marten - I can't answer all of the questions, simply because I don't know the answers. But I'll give it my best shot with the information I do know.

A TapID is required to play in the Deluxe Player, to play any online multiplayer (Challenge Lobby) games, and to participate in any community activity (making playlists, rating games, posting in forums, etc). So, if a game is playable by an anonymous person (iow, games playable in the Lite Player in solo mode), anyone in the world with a broadband connection can play it as long as our agreement with the publisher doesn't prohibit it.

As for MO:UL, we're working to fix the problem so that anyone in in the list of countries found on the Myst Online site can play the game for free, as they have been able to since we opened it to international users. That one is a bug.

If you live in one of the countries listed at Myst Online, you should be able to create a TapID and play all of the free games that can be played in your country (see licensing above).

We are working to provide Gold service to many countries internationally. In the mean time, we hope that the free games we offer provide a lot of fun.

I hope this at least begins to answer your questions. Smile

Conclusions we can draw from the above:
* GameTap now has some free games
* Free games available in the "Lite" player do not require an account
* Free games available only in the "Deluxe" player require either a free (GameTap Green) or paid (GameTap Gold) account
* Not all countries are eligible to create free (GameTap Green) accounts
* Paid (GameTap Gold) accounts are still limited to only US and Canada for now
* Not all free games are available in all countries
* The intent of making Myst Online free until June 4 is only to make it free until that date for customers in the 14 precertified countries.

That's the state of things.

... still not possible to get a TapID.../shrug Rolling Eyes

@ MJ and Prof. Askew: When I set the last post on page 152 I got an error message in return,
that's why I hit the submit button once again...
now there were two of this posts and so I deleted one of them, but the
page 153 was still there...lol... Smile
I tell you this so that you know that there is no special damage in this thread for whatever reason... Wink

Jana, there is a problem with this one thread where the first post on a new page causes an error message to occur on the new page, while the post appears on the end of the previous page. We haven't figured out why that is or been able to fix it yet (it hasn't been our first priority, to be honest Embarassed ). I'm sure we'll sort it out at some point.

For the record, I don't think we should worry about making posts just to fix the thread. Smile If you have something to post, do so and it will fix the thread, but otherwise when the thread is broken the most recent post is at the end of the previous page. (I'm pretty sure that's how it's been working)

Yeah, we should fix it. Razz

to post at the GameTap forum by logging in with our username and password
as I did it in the early afternoon (my time), but without the possibility to edit it... Mr. Green

Wasn't you guys. Was something else.

Am feeling a hair bit better now but, well, you've probably all heard the news by now that Blade has been laid off, and will be out of a job as of July 31. This just doubled the amount of stress on the surface, and I can't afford to have Cavern stress, too.

Right now... oh noooo!

I hadn't heard that. Sad Since the LJ Strikethrough I don't know where to get Eleri updates. I hope he can find a new place soon that will treat him right.
I'm so sorry for all your stress..

Hugs to Eleri...

Manly hugs to Blade...

Lay-offs can suck. But without getting into a closed-door-open-window platitude, everyone I know who's been layed off (myself included), the resulting job situation has consistently been *much* better than the situation that layed us off.

And since I know YOU, Blade... I expect the same happiness for you.

Fingers are crossed, and as one Customer-Service type to another, let me know if I can do anything to help you out.
