no, sentience is NOT a requirement to activate the Link, in previous questions to RAWA, he's replied saying that one could use a pack animal to carry materials to an Age.

the "animals that could link", in my opinion, could mean an active verb "link", as in to make a link. the closest word choice could be "animals that could write", although they didn't exactly write (the bahro stones weren't like d'ni books). but they DID form links, and that's what i'm certain yeesha's phrasing means.
