I spoke to Brian about this briefly earlier and I think we should stage a protest in Ae'Gura.
Cate seems to think no one cares the forums have gone, she's wrong and I feel we should gather and let her know she's wrong.
Any thoughts? _________________ Grey Skies | Beneath |

I considered this, too, but I think it's too early to stage a protest. TGT has been making an effort to not come across as reactionary and, if anything, we need to be initiating more discussions with the DRC (although protests are way more exciting ). Protests have worked in the past and have been pretty effective, but I think we should keep it as the ace in our back pocket for when things really start to look dark. _________________

I agree with Saxy... in part. I do think this is a good platform on which to make a stand about explorer/DRC relations, but I'm not sure about a protest for the means.
If we can unify the voice of the explorers, I think that will more than suffice. _________________ KI: 34353 |

well I am waiting for Marie to get back to me about the forums (trying to get a copy of them to archiving, perhaps reopen them and see if Micheal will leak stuff to them).
I think Cate needs to be remembered that we do have a say in things however. _________________ Grey Skies | Beneath |

Tough call. I'm glad the public discussion forums are gone, and it is clear that the new site should be updated on a regular basis (similar to how the old site was intended to function). Do we need the DRC forums? The DRC never directly answered any questions outside the cavern, and those forums only appeared to be a hotbed for flame wars. With the DRC Liaisons now flying solo, there is really no greater purpose for it other than being a historical archive. Other forums fare far better and cover the same issues.
I've thought about it, and I believe the act of closing the DRC forums was not a hostile decision on the DRC's part. If they meant to exclude us, they would have done so through other means. |

Yeah there was alot of info on there that we still use, the hostilities could have been dealt with if the mods actually modded..
I decided to arrange a sit in, not of GT but of those who want the forums to return anyway, dunno if anyone will show up or not but I'll be there _________________ Grey Skies | Beneath |

I tend to agree with what Daed said. The purpose of them was great, but they never got used properly. The DRC stopped posting useful information, and in their absence it just degenerated into one argument after another (and usually two or three on top of each other). An archive would be awesome, but as for the purpose of DRC sharing info, there's many other avenues out there for it.
And as for community, I think it will encourage the use of sites like ours, UO, DJC, GoG, and other group sites. Maybe we'll even get some interesting new groups out of the deal too! _________________

There is another way to approach this.
We know that Cate cannot be in the cavern all of the time. Therefore, the feedback she receives could be limited to those who are around when she is around.
Rather than a protest, it would be interesting to attempt an in-Cavern poll. Track names. Consolidate the names. Poll as many people as we can directly, on their opinion of the situation.
If we collect a large enough sampling of explorers, it has some scientific validity. We could say, for example, "1 in 4 explorers is concerned about the removal of the forums." _________________ Durin Mephit * Member of Guild of Messengers - Unless otherwise stated, opinions are mine only and not Guild endorsed.

I like that idea, Marten.
The thing with protests is, they're a realy powerful tool, but that's why they have to be used sparingly. If we protest everything that's annoying or bothersome, then no one will take such actions seriously anymore.
As the Great Tree group, I think we should try other options before going the protest route, or when we really need to protest something, the gesture will not carry so much weight. (Members as individuals and other people or groups are of course free to do as they like; I'm talking only about Great Tree actions.)
I do think we need to verify this is indeed an important issue for the explorers (I suspect it is) and approach Cate and/or the DRC about it. If it fails to bring results... then we protest. I'll bring snacks.

Are we bringing signs, or is this just going to be a show of solidarity on this issue? _________________ KI: 34353 |

Oops, I posted my opinion about this in another thread.
I say, let's do it! It's not much, but it's what we got.
Worst case, we get to gather people and make ourselves known.
Best case, something happens that we can take credit for.

Yes it was just a message board. Yes the DRC never used it anymore. Yes there were many flame wars and trolls there.
BUT
It was also place in the community where a lot of growth happened, where a lot of essays were written and where we could keep our cautious optimism in check.
AND
We were not consulted about its removal. No chance was given for us to archive all that history. Cate (I assume) took a decission which affected our community without first consulting us.
SO
Lets do something about it. As far as I'm concerned its the thin end of a very wide wedge. |
