UPDATED: 9/26/06 - Just when you thought we were going to have an election...
So, latest news - the DRC Liaison Elections Part Deux are temporarily on hold. It seems that due to "technical difficulties" our voting site isn't ready to go yet. No word on when we can expect that to be ready. So candidates, keep on doing that campaign thang, and hopefully you can use the extra time to pull a few extra votes your way!
Stay tuned for updates...
Timeline:
- Nominations - Aug 30-Sept 16. Folks must be nominated in the specified thread, seconded, and then the person must personally confirm or deny their candidacy.
- Campaigning - Sept 17-?. We will be using the Uru Choice website again.
- Election - voting is on hold till further notice.
- Newly elected Liaisons will take office Oct 14(?); the incumbents leave office end of October. This allows for a two week overlap to break the new kids in.
Current Topics of Debate:
- Trickster is working feverishly to get Uruchoice ready to go. Updates pending.
- Let's hear from the Candidates! The campaigning thread is now open.
- The candidates are asked to answer a number of interview questions during their campaign period. What would you like to know from them? note - this thread is still open through the campaign period.
- The question has been raised - should we require a minimum "community involvement" in the elections in order to validate them?
I think people are feeling a little less concerned about it this time around...

DRC Liaison Elections coming up
After some delays in the past weeks, the election of the DRC Liaisons is coming up.
Voting will start on October 21, and end October 28. The new liaisons will then take office on October 29.
It will take place on the newly created UruVote site, designed and administrated by amonre.
There you can find the rules for the election, a list of candidates and detailed information on them (if provided).
Threads with more in depth information and discussion on the new process (Zardoz' "Plan B") can be found in the at the DRC Liaison Election Discussion Forum.

In case you guys haven't seen it yet, Marten made some excellent commentary on what to (carefully!) consider when making your vote. You should read the post. _________________

OMG, that is really absolutely outstanding!!!
I am very pleased that somebody pointed all that out in this
very clear and explicit way. And I really wished, that everybody
had the chance to read that and so to be given the chance to
internalize all the mentioned aspects of viewing the upcoming
elections and the immense responsibility with its special tasks involved.
I wished that everybody had the chance to really evaluate all the pros and
cons before considering to vote for a candidate and not just to vote for
reasons of popularity or sympathy and such things…
Of course, everybody has this chance, we are free, but it seems that many
should be reminded on their accountability to the whole community and to
be informed about the special different and extended terms and tasks/demands
involved in this new special situation that’s coming up when the cavern will be
reopened to the worldwide public…
Thank you, Marten, and thank you Saxy, for posting.

Makes me wonder though just how many people do think seriously about this vote. It's not like it's the end of the world, but at least some thought should be put into it!
If the voting stats are anything like the US, only 30ish% of the people actually vote, let alone think about who they're voting for beyond name recognition... I'd hope our community was better than that, but kinda doubt it. _________________

This is correct Rils. I doubt that, too. Especially when reading
through what is already said and stated in the forums.
Yesterday evening (in Germany it was evening time, not for you)
I attended a meeting to that subject and got the impression that
many people still don’t realize what’s going on why, not to mention
whom to vote for or understanding the concepts behind the “existence
of something like the Liaisons”.
As you already said, Rils, it’s not like the end of the world, and for
most of the people it’s a game, everything is fun and cool and we are
a great community, but they should slowly slowly consider, that the
situation will change, as Marten already stated in the above mentioned
post “…the inevitable change in our community; we'll no longer be a
small, isolated group of enthusiasts keeping the proverbial flame alive…”
and that will change the whole situation a lot.
Maybe there was not enough information provided to the forums, not the
DRC forum, but forums like UO, urulive.com, international forums etc…
There should have been more meetings in the cavern like yesterday evening
to inform the people and where the candidates had the opportunity to introduce
themselves and their concepts…
Besides not knowing, not wanting, not caring, there are also people that are
afraid about whom to vote for. They are just worried or excited, cause of the
lack of information on the subject itself and the candidates as well…
We also shouldn’t forget the people already involved in the Beta…
Lets just wait and see… Maybe it’s not too late spreading the word…
But however we’ll hope the best… |

Cyan has never given an adequite description of what they want from the Liaisons. A lot of the chaos from the first time around stems from that, I think. No one knew what they were supposed to do and Cyan didn't give any guidance on what they wanted.
Even after one term of liaisons, I still don't think we know exactly what they are supposed to do. And we have more questions now because we have no idea what roles the liaisons will play in Live.
So what are people running for? Will they just be cat-herding for meetings like the liaisons have done before? Are they automatically a part of the DRC storyline? By becoming a liaison, what sort of commitment are you making to the community? To Cyan?
I understand that they wanted to the community to have some level of self-determination. But when the only ones with any actual authority over the situation is Cyan, Cyan has the responsibility to explain what they are looking for, at the very least. |

I fully agree, and that was our big complaint last time - what do you want from us?!?!
With all the work being put into resurrecting UL and having it ready by Christmas, I understand they are busy people over at Cyan. A few straight answers would be nice. I understand the difficulty in keeping it all IC, however, this is one area where it crosses over into the real world and few real world guidelines would be much appreciated.
Oh well, complaining about it here won't do anything...
