I thought that same thing when I was playing around in Teledahn, only it was a greater feeling being out at the water's edge. I wanted to post a pic, but for some reason my program crapped out on me a few days ago. Grrr... _________________ Jaharen

As many of you know, I generally remove myself from most things spoilerish and all things hackerish....
Consequently, some things get by me that would do me no harm. In this case, I'm talking about COBBS. Can someone please tell me what it is they've accomplished and how it works?
It seems to be concerned with chatting via the KI to another player. Correct? Is this text chat? No game interaction whatsoever other than that, right? _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

Oh wow that is cool
But I still can't get Uru to install I seem to have a damaged file on my Uru disk and everytime I try to install it the install program crashes or restarts my computer. Until either Chronicles comes out or I find some workaround there's not not much I can do.
But it is cool that they've managed to do this |

Well COBBS is the official or unofficial BBS for hacking Uru. They have been doing some great stuff there in reverse engineering the URU files while still trying to stay within the Cyan guidelines. One of the projects is to try and create a fan based live server but they are waiting for Cyan & Ubisoft to give the green light. In the meantime, they have enabled a way for us to chat again using the KI through IRC (Internet Relay Chat). I believe it's still in the beta testing stage. You won't be able to interact with other Avatar's like you did in live, but you can still chat with others. We may have to start a Great Tree IRC chat room soon _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208

Hmm... I'm coming at this with some mixed emotions. I got so fed up with Schizm, a rather Myst-esque game. There was another player you could communicate with, and even be in the same place as, but you could not see them.
It's close to what we all used to have, but not the same. I'm holding out for the Fan-Based Live Server. FBLS... FIBBLES!! _________________ KI 182798

The thing with Schizm is it wasn't other real people. It was another character in the game with whom you could trade places. Trahald, I'm with you when it comes to worrying about people in the military. I've got an Air Force friend in Iraq, an Army Ranger friend all over, and a Navy friend who I believe is still stationed in Washington. Sorry to get off-topic, but I wanted to share the burden with Trahald. _________________ Jaharen

|
|
I'm trying to come up with a list of neat things you can do using Fly mode. I poked briefly around Clockwork Orange BBS but couldn't find anything similar.
Last night while flitting around D'ni, I noticed that I could fly to Takotah rooftop and drop in and suddenly, the game would really put me in Takotah rooftop. I believe I now understand better some of the strange behaviors I saw in Uru Live, and why the Nexus in beta (which I never experienced) had multiple cities, but the public prologue had only one.
It seems that all of the city locations really are loaded into memory together - the balconies, the rooftop, and the Kadish Gallery - as part of the full city. Example: Using Fly mode, you can start in Kadish Gallery and move past the barriers up to the doors, and exit into the alleyway in D'ni. It works fine and I'm actually rather surprised that the doors weren't enabled in To D'ni after you've explored both places (much as the barriers are automatically moved). The only flaw with scooting through the doors in Fly mode is that the Kadish Gallery music continues to play... but I really look at that as a bonus.
So here's my theory: In Uru Live, I noticed that sometimes I'd be in Kadish Gallery or a balcony or some other location, and people would be listed in my KI as being there with me, and I could talk to them, but they wouldn't be at the location I was at. Yet I knew that I wasn't in the "city" proper because that area was limited to some 20-30 people and had terrible lag. Apparently, these people were in other city locations (such as another balcony or on the Takotah rooftop), and together we were in a full copy of Ae'gura, but just unable to actually traverse the spaces between our locations (unable to use most of the city). I suspect that there were still 5 (or more) cities per server, with one city serving as the Nexus-linkable Ae'gura and the others used solely for the small locations where people tended not to linger. The server would automatically drop a linking player into the least populated city copy for those locations.
Anyway, aside from the Truman effect and verifying that the doors to the Kadish Gallery were indeed the doors we'd always thought they were, what other fun things have people discovered using Fly mode? _________________ Durin Mephit * Member of Guild of Messengers - Unless otherwise stated, opinions are mine only and not Guild endorsed.

Yeah, I remember reading about that A fat, pink arrow.
I think it's interesting that while the balconies, Kadish Gallery, and Takotah rooftop are all built right into D'ni, the Baron's Office and of course Great Zero are separate "ages". Those are enclosed areas that a person would be unlikely to see into or out of with D'ni proper, but why wasn't Kadish Gallery treated the same way? The balconies and Takotah are really the only places one can easily see and possibly interact with people down on the streets.
The neighborhoods are separate "ages" too, of course, but that was an obvious necessity. It's interesting to fly far far out from Bevin and find the little dark model of Ae'gura sitting out in the red lake. It's not just a bitmap on the horizon.
Good old Bob O'Goobo's office is also a separate location, although the model data is cribbed right out of D'ni - from the shape of the building, I can tell it is located between Takotah Alley and the Museum alleyway, so the spyroom must be located in a room under Takotah rooftop. It's rather disturbing to see how much of O'Goobo's interior is modeled; if you fly into the room and turn around, the windows are all opaque and the open window appears closed. There are no less than three (3) open Teledahn linking books sitting around the room, too.
Finally, there is the Great Shaft, also modeled as a separate location. The shaft is not completely modeled but it is still very interesting. Apparently there are some sort of elevator rails that run up and down most of its length, but these stop at a balcony or mezzanine level, at which there are a few doors leading to outside of the shaft. The true bottom of the shaft is much lower and has 5 doors - two on either side in pairs, and one door with a tiny bit of D'ni script above it. I hope we get to see more of this place in Path of the Shell.
One final curiosity: The note about Guild Master Kadish is a visible as a large object floating _behind_ the Kadish vault if you fly around to the backside. _________________ Durin Mephit * Member of Guild of Messengers - Unless otherwise stated, opinions are mine only and not Guild endorsed.

This was taken this morning. Anything look vaguely familiar?
The IRC chat works great. This is just the first step towards the fan based Live servers, and a big step at that. If any of you need any help getting this to work, feel free to ask. They are working on the To D'ni version but it might take awhile because a lot more has to be patched to make it possible. Cyan took out a lot of "Live" code and routines when they released the first XP. _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208
