KnightOwl posted this link over at UO. Doesn't look good.

I'd sure like to know if Cyan agrees with this recent announcement. With all this talk of vigilante marketing and doing everything we possibly can to boost sales.......I'd kind of like to know if it would make any difference. Meaning: IF sales exceed expectations......CAN we expect more product for Uru?
Or has the end been written.......? _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

I've just been reading about this on the Lyst and noticed it said 'final' in the article. Someone has already emailed the site and got this response from the writer who wrote the article:
Quote: | I just sent an email to the reporter who posted the story and asked about the use of "final" in their headline, and he replied "The title posted on our Wire site is Ubisoft's title for the press release". |
I really hope this isn't true and it's just a big misunderstanding |

Well, Farlesis, I, too, have been reading what you're reading...the Lyst and a little further down (as you're probably reading now) Randomos of Ubi had this to say....
Quote: | Randomos: Quick update to avert confusion- we've been told (by Cyan Worlds) that although the Story of Uru may continue, in a new form, this will be the last of the Uru installments. |
Sounds pretty official to me. Let's hope something good comes out of it. _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

I must admit I'm a little disappointed. There were so many ages that I dreamed we could explore in future expansion packs, one was Negilahn. But I also understand that the livelihood of the company and it's employee's is what's most important.
But whatever they decide for the future, I hope it will somehow involve the story of Myst and the D'ni. It's too rich of a storyline to just let it drop. And I wish Cyan the best. You know the fans will be there with our support.
UPDATE: Grey Dragon just posted a message from Rand in his blog:
http://www.thegreydragon.com/
So I guess the ending hasn't entirely been written, or has it? I'm confused _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208

I don't think the ending is ever written, we all continue to write the book... |

As nice as that sounds, Grey Dragon, I think that the ending, for Uru, may be written.
But I continue to hope not.
Perhaps Rand feels that the heart of Uru was in the Live aspect of it, not as an offline single-player game. That would be my personal view. I keep hearing that Path of the Shell will tell us about the future of D'ni. The future of Cyan, too, I hope.
Quote: | We can shift our direction to accommodate the needs of whoever pays the bill - in this case Ubisoft. Ubisoft is interested in other exciting products, and we are happy to oblige. |
It seems that it will be single-player for a while. But yes, we can continue to write the book online - in the forums, the Great Tree, and other places. But I am disappointed that it seems we will not be able to meet again in the Cavern. |

Well, if the end is written, We could put together our own design team and pass up Ubi altogether. _________________ No-one has explained WHY a raven is like a writing desk! |

Bill Slease posted the following to the Lyst List:
Quote: | It is still the case that the future depends on the future:
If we sell 0 expansion packs, it won't make sense to make more.
If we sell 1,000,000 expansion packs, it might make sense to make more.
If we sell somewhere between 0 and 1,000,000 it might be harder to decide.
(If we sell 100,000,000 expansion packs, there probably won't be more becuase we'll be too busy not working.)
Ron said, "Quick update to avert confusion- we've been told (by Cyan Worlds) that although the Story of Uru may continue, in a new form, this will be the last of the Uru installments."
Not sure who told who that...we've been saying "it depends" and arguing against words like "final" and "complete" (with some but obviously not total success). The short is that at this point in time, noone has money that they think would be wise to invest in another expansion pack given other investment options. The way to change that is to make the investment option more attractive. The way to do that is to sell lots of TPOTS & CC.
That's really all there is to it. No conspiracy. No hidden agendas. Just boring old common sense.

Rand and Bill are really saying the same things. If The Path of the Shell and Complete Chronicles sell well enough, there will be money to develop more installments. Where there is a market, there can be a game for it!

So, now that TPOTS went gold, does that mean expansion packs will stick around? _________________

No. All it means is that TPOTS has been finished and tested by Cyan and is ready for publication (Gold Master). As to whether or not there will be more XP's, we can only hope that Ubisoft/Cyan sells a ton of them _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208
