|
|
Quote: | A few days ago, I ordered a server through Layered Technology for the purpose of starting up a UU shard with the hope of running the H'uru server code in the future. The hardware is a XP2800 with 1GB Ram, 160MB Hard Drive, and a 100Mbps uplink port running FreeBSD 5.0. |
Well the server is up and running - YAY!!!! I didn't realize how much fun it would be setting up the software for FreeBSD when most everything is written for Redhat Fedora. Oh well, live and learn
Right now myself and one other person is doing preliminary testing of the shard. I still have a few scripts to get working for backing up the vault plus a few other tweaks I may need to accomplish.
But in the next couple of days I will need some GT members to help give it a run through. If you are interested in helping to test the shard, please send me a private message here and I'll send you the IP address for connecting. _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208

I personally don't have a problem with it. Nothing is official anyway. And I know from personal experience...when an opportunity comes along to learn something by doing it, you should do it.
I am not a shard hopper. I stick with Tapestry and EricL's efforts. This is mostly a time factor. I simply don't have enough time to duplicate my efforts on other shards. Having said that, however, I would have no problem jumping on the Great Tree shard every now and again to help put it through its paces. _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

I don't have a problem with you using The Great Tree name for the shard, Ashtar...
And I think it's fantastic that you will be running the H'uru server code so the UU community can experience The Path of the Shell online with friends!
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance... _________________ URU Live KI #: 50911 MOULa KI #11697212

Thanks for your support eveyone! I'm currently in the process of setting up the server and hope to have it online by this weekend. All I have to do is to learn how to think in Linux again _________________ Uru Live KI #: 69208

Sounds like a great idea. On top of that, I imagine it could even provide a true "headquarters" for GT, or a place to meet.
The only thing I am worried about is whether there can be too many shards running. Makes it hard to keep track of who is where.
In regards to that, I'm surprised no one has compiled a hub for all of the shards running through HTML code the names/KI/locations of all of the players throughout UU. I have a favorites list of each shard, but having one source would be pretty cool IMO. Maybe a mini-project to consider... Hmm... |

Great idea, Daed, but I'm not sure each of the individual shard administrators could compile such a list... Only Cyan's authorization server would have that information, right? _________________ URU Live KI #: 50911 MOULa KI #11697212

Technically it would be possible to compile a list in HTML, perhaps using frames containing the feed from the individual URLs of the player lists. Not sure if we'd need permission for that...(?)
All of the player lists are browser-accessable webpages. Makes it easy to player hunt without having to log in to each shard. |

Okay, here's the Professor showing his ignorance yet again. I've seen "Bump" before in other forums and never really knew what it meant. So...... _________________ Professor Daniel Askew - Securing our reality from the machinations of the Station Masters. |

being somewhat of a forum n00b myself, I'll be happy to share my theroy on "Bump":
I beleive it to be a "nothing" post meant to bring a thread back up to the top of a list of threads.
This is not to be confused with a "necropost" which is basically a bump that brings a thread from 37 or so pages down in the list of threads back to the top... raising a dead thread to the top.
"dead thread"... heh... I'm a rhymer all the time... er.
Please, feel free to slap me if I'm wrong. _________________ KI 182798

You're not wrong CuzinJohn, although I'd like to point out that a necropost is a subcategory of bump, and not a different thing entirely. It is, however, usually frowned upon, whereas less extreme bumps are not. |
